Growing up in Nashville with a huge, supportive black community around him, Brenton has always cherished personal relationships. The son of two first-generation high income-earners, his parents’ social circles were filled with successful professionals of color, many of whom were also the first in their families to earn the money they were earning. As the saying goes, “unallocated money is spent money”, and Brenton watched these people he loved, all succeeding in their careers, struggle to manage what they brought home.
Brenton got to see firsthand the responsibility of taking care of others when you do well, and the pitfalls of offering that help without a plan. This responsibility is what drove him to financial services in 2010 when two financial professionals, Alan Moore and Marcus Henderson, showed him the impact sharing financial literacy could have on his community. As it turns out, the latter of the two had not only been a longtime advisor and friend to Brenton’s parents, but was also the founder of Henderson Financial Group Inc., the firm where Brenton still serves to this day.
Since that time, Brenton has dedicated his practice not to acquiring clients who are already wealthy, but seeking those who need help getting there. Whether it’s managing high student loan balances, buying that first investment property or assisting clients in determining how much they can afford to help family, his money conversations are often different than what you think of when you hear the term “wealth management”.
Because of his work, in 2015 Brenton was named one of ThinkAdvisor’s Top 30 insurance professionals under 30 nationwide (while the award still stands, his “under 30” status is now a thing of the past). In 2018 he was a member of the Nashville Business Journal’s class of Top 40 professionals under 40, and since 2014 has been a member of Million Dollar Roundtable, one of the premier associations for financial professionals worldwide.
Brenton loves to share financial tips and is a sought-after contributor for articles and insights on financial trends. He’s been featured in publications ranging from USA Today, Business Insider, CNBC and Yahoo Finance, sharing with the public on various financial tools. And he is frequently asked to contribute insights with his industry peers in interviews and articles for outlets such as Advisor Today, Employee Benefits Adviser and Round The Table magazine.
While he loves his work, it’s a small part of what makes Brenton … Brenton! He and his wife Lynae have a toddler, Brenton II, who loves to climb shaky structures, run with scissors and whatever else he can to keep them on their toes. He’s involved in his community, serving as a board and committee member for TriStar Arts, the Vanderbilt Institutional Review and Riverside Nashville Seventh Day Adventist Chapel. But above all, whether at work or at home, Brenton is a guy who just likes sharing time with good people.
